Report From Zuni: 1986
Carolee Campbell 2022
The type is hand set Meridien with Neuland for the display. The text is printed letterpress on dampened Charter Oak, handmade at the Barcham Green Hayle Mill in Kent, England (1808-1987) and now closed. The Charter Oak used here was made in 1986, the same year as this memoir of my visit to Zuni, New Mexico. Watermarks in the paper can be seen, one of which includes the date. The cover paper, Indiana Corn, was made by Andrea Peterson in 2022 from corn stalks and leaves from local fields at Hook Pottery Paper in La Porte, Indiana.
The memoir was written following a trip to observe the culmination of the Shalako, an ancient Zuni tribal ceremony that takes place near the Winter Solstice in Zuni, New Mexico. The Shalako marks the end of the Zuni ceremonial year. With the exception of invited guests, the Shalako is closed to outsiders.
